WEEK IN REVIEW - WEEK 4

We finished up our first month of school this week! We certainly had a very full week.

Photobucket
In science we are still learning about the skeletal system.
Photobucket
Did you know that if you measure your arms straight out, it will be very close in size to your height? Amazing.
Photobucket
And did you know that I am completely in love with Boo's hair like this? She is such a good student.
Photobucket
She tries sooo hard to make her letters perfectly.
Photobucket
While Banana tries hard to teach her stuffed bunny how to write. He's coming along nicely. However, Banana is still dilligently working on her spelling...
Photobucket
Love, love, love the bear ears in her hair
Photobucket
We are continuing to work on all of our memorization pieces - Boo loves the singing best of all.
Photobucket
And this week we began our studies of famous composers and artists. This week we studied about Monet and impressionism. We also listened to Beethoven Lives Upstairs - the girls really enjoy it.
Photobucket
We tried our hand at making our very own "Monet's".

Photobucket
While they painted, I read to them some stories about Monet's life through living books.
Photobucket
We experimented with tube tracks - always fun!
Photobucket
We worked dilligently on spelling...sigh... anyone know of a really good spelling program for those who are "spellingly challenged"???
Photobucket
Boo worked on spelling out words by looking at some flash cards and then using her set of Magnet Letters to spell them out on the board.
Photobucket
We even dressed up like a Medieval Princess!
Photobucket
The highlight of the week for Banana was making a quill ink pen using a real turkey feather and ink as part of our history studies. It was a very interesting process to transform the feather into a pen. We were so surprised when it actually worked!!
Photobucket

Photobucket
Banana enjoyed writing all of her grandparents letters, and then properly addressing the envelopes for the mail.

Photobucket
I think we killed a few trees with all the paper the girls used up - this activity went on all afternoon and into the night until I finally had to put a stop to it. One Mommy can only tolerate so much black ink in the kitchen. You can be sure these feathers will be coming out again soon!
Photobucket
Boo was determined to write in cursive - I guess a quill pen just begs to be used in cursive.
Photobucket
No - she didn't write the word "Jesus" - she asked me to do that, but she did write her name in cursive there at the top!
Photobucket
And I received a wonderful love letter.
Photobucket
We also created our own mossaics just like those in Byzantine era. Well, maybe not JUST like them, but we did our best! Plaster of Paris in the kitchen is also a lesson in patience and self-control. But the smiles on their faces make it all worth while.
Photobucket
Of course - we did SOOO much more than just what you see here, but most of it is not as exciting to look at. Lots of reading, dictation, narration, copywork, co-op classes, workbooks, critical thinking, and much more! If only we had a few more hours in the day. Hope you had a great week too!

I love her hair like that too - I noticed it in the Rain pictures and it's adorable on her. Austin has spent hours with his marble tracks. Casey would love the quill feather pen - she's always collecting feathers (mostly goose).

What a beautiful week with your family! The picture of your daughter looking at the transparency made me laugh- the kidneys are on either side of her nose. :-)

I always love to see what kind of education is happening in the homes of other families such as ours. May God continue to pour His grace into your family!

You always get so much accomplished, Heather! It looks like you guys had another great week!! ;)

We are using some of the same resources for Monet (although we're hit or miss about getting to art every week!) ... I never thought to watercolor the coloring pages ... what a great idea!!

P.S. Your medieval princess is adorable!! ;)

You guys have so much fun! I remember just looooooooving anatomy lessons. It's so fun to see what other families are doing for homeschooling. We're going to homeschool our girls too, when they are old enough of course. I just love the pic of the paints. If I had craft or art room/corner, I'd frame it and hang it on the wall!

I was happy to discover your blog today. I was unable to find a contact link. I hope it's OK that I'm contacting you through a public comment. I've developed an educational program for Windows called SpellQuizzer that helps children learn their spelling and vocabulary words without the battle that parents often have getting them to sit down and write them out while the parents dictate to them. The parent enters the child's spelling words into the software making a sound recording of each word. Then the software helps the child practice his or her words. It really helped my children with their weekly spelling lists.

I would appreciate your reviewing SpellQuizzer in Timeless and Treasured. If you are interested in hosting a giveaway of a SpellQuizzer license I'd be happy to supply a free license to the winner. You can learn more about the program at http://www.SpellQuizzer.com. There's a video demo you can watch at http://www.spellquizzer.com/SpellQuizzer-Demo.htm and a community site where SpellQuizzer users can share their spelling lists with one another (http://www.SpellQuizzer.com/Community). Finally, there's a page targeted to homeschooling families at http://www.spellquizzer.com/spelling-software-for-homeschoolers.htm. I'd be happy to send you a complimentary license for the software. Please let me know if you are interested.

Thank you very much!

Tell Miss Boo that Aunt Jennie also very much enjoys singing to learn (it just sticks in the brain better that way) and trying to make perfect letters. And as for Miss Banana, spelling is just tough, she can probably spell better than some adults I know, but she will have spell check one day anyway. :-)

Oh wow - yours is my favorite kind of blog - amazing photos and homeschooling all rolled into one. You are inspiring me to learn how to take better indoor pictures, yours are amazing!! And what a full week you had with so many fun projects! I'm impressed. We are studying the middle ages this year, too (but we haven't left Rome, yet. We're moving kind of slow - but glad you are ahead of me so I can borrow your wonderful ideas :)). Great, great post!

You did have a busy week. I love Boo's hair like that. Love Hannah's letter too. Can't wait to get it. Looks like homeschool is going good. Lots of fun things you are doing. That is funny that the kidneys are on either side of Hannah's nose. Didn't really notice that until I read it.Cute. Looking forward to Thanksgiving.
