PHOTOGRAPHY Q & A

Someone suggested recently (thank you Carrie!) that I maybe share some photography tutorials, questions and answers, or just some general photography secrets here on my blog. I thought "What a great idea!!" I always love to talk photography, and already have several people that I mentor via e-mail, and in real life. I LOVE teaching others the things I have learned about photography. Soooo - if you have any questions at all - about photography - or anything else for that matter - leave them here in the comment section and I'll come up with some photography helps and hints!

I am just transitioning from a "point and shoot" to a Nikon DSLR and I love it. The biggest problem I am running into, though, is getting the focus right. I am operating in full manual whenever possible, but for some reason the focus is always off in my pictures. I try to line up the "points" inside the viewfinder to focus on my subject and when I look at the pictures in camera they seem to look crystal clear (same on the display after taking the photo). But when I put them onto the computer I notice they are slightly "fuzzy". I know this sounds a bit ridiculous, but what am I doing wrong with setting up the picture? Is there a way to ensure that my photos will be in focus without having to go back to using Auto Focus? I'm getting tired of having ruined photo opps because my focus is "off". Any tips you can offer are appreciated! :)

  2. I'd LOVE to know how to use our D90 we've had since May... I'm not using it nearly to its full potential, but I am also not very patient when it comes to this sort of a thing either. So I'm just looking for some quick helpful hints. All my pictures are of Jamie, well you can see what they are on my blog. Thanks!!!! I also have the same problem as Hannah.

  4. I am soooo excited! Heather, you ROCK!! ;)

I'd love to sit at your feet ... do you have time for another emailing mentee?

The pics of your daughter {inside!} twirling away ... does your house have some great natural light? Do you use a flash in cases like these?

I bought a 50 mm 1.8 last year, and it helps (of course, I'd LOVE the 1.4), but our house is pretty dark. So ... I bought a flash, and I've tried bouncing it, but our walls and ceilings aren't white. Therefore, I don't usually get the look I'm after.

I'm sure I'll have lots of questions! I've tried to learn online ... and I have some ... I just don't have a lot of time to search. Some photographers are so stingy with their tips, but others are so willing to share. I'm so glad you are up for this!! Woohoo!!

I'm sure I'll have more questions soon ... Thanks a bunch!!

  6. Ok, Sweet Heather, I have been out of town and a little behind here...so I hope I haven't missed out! Here are some things I'm wondering :)

    1. In a general family or kid shoot, how many different backgrounds and poses do you "shoot" for? (Sorry, couldn't resist the corny pun)

    2. Where are your favorite places to shoot?

    3. Is there any chance you would share photos of where you shoot your newborn shoots...or do you have a studio? It has been really fun to see your home. Inspiring too. As soon as we break out of the 90s in SC, I am going to go find some fall decor!
